| Events at Elmwood : Border Wars Event - April 15, 2007 at 2:00 PM |

 The Border Wars re-ignite with a pro and anti-slavery debate among some of the historic personalities of the era! The LeCompton Players, joined by other living history reenactors, will portray legendary historic personalities such as Abraham Lincoln, John Brown, James Lane, Rev. Thomas Johnson, and Harriet Beecher Stowe and MANY more. These historic figures will visit Elmwood Cemetery for this controversial debate! Plus, the Thomas J. Key #1920 camp, Sons of the Confederate Veterans will have a Confederate encampment. Harold Dellinger with "Harold's Bookstore" will have books for sale on Jesse James, William Quantrill, the Border Wars and much more! Living History reenactors will tell the stories of their adventures during the times. The Gum Springs Serenaders will perform period music and Elmwood volunteer Roger Douthit will instruct the public on the art of grave dowsing! There will also be a Border War Museum in the Armour Chapel with exhibits of personal possessions of Elmwood residents that lived through the Border War period and tales from the time! We've been working on this new webpage for a little over a week now, and finally got it to a point this evening where we decided to take-the-leap! When you go to the historickcelmwood.org web address, there is now an "enter" page (see the image on the left). When you click on it, it brings you over to this website. Within a week, everything that existed on the old site, will have been moved over to this new site.

AMERICUS V. MCKIM STONE DEDICATION CEREMONY THIS SATURDAY MAY 20TH, 2006 AT 2:00 P.M. RAIN OR SHINE!! The Society of American Baseball Researchers and Lykins Neighborhood Association, in cooperation with Elmwood Cemetery, will dedicate a permanent stone for the "Father of Kansas City baseball." Mr. McKim is responsible for bring the first major league baseball team to Kansas City! Elmwood is proud to be a part of this sports history! Bring your ball glove too! We plan on throwing a little catch to mark this historic occasion!!!
MEMORIAL DAY EVENTS POSTED! On Saturday, May 27, 2006 we return with our Memorial Day events!! We kick it off with our Flag Ceremony and then it is over to Block V for the dedication of the 1886 Tornado victims memorial! Next is our tribute to our police and firefighters as we dedicate "Heroes' Way", a new and educational pathway full of biographies of our heroes who put their lives on the line everyday! At 11:00 a.m. we will have our popular Hog Roast!! Former Provost marshal and Frank James defender, Abram Comingo (played by Ralph Monaco) will be on hand as well as Jesse James wife, Zee James (played by Deborah Buckner). The Weilert Sisters will be playing their harps inside the Armour Chapel. An ecumenical service will close the ceremonies! The details of each event can be found on our EVENTS page! We look forward to everyone coming out and having a good time!! Our "Historical Biographies" page has run into some difficulties and we were not able to post the latest updates promoted in March and for this, we apologize! But...we will be back on track with new bios and updates that we're sure will make you wonder how Elmwood can keep coming up with such wonderful and exciting history!! |

Happy Easter, everyone! Online right now is our second installment of "Stories!" This story will take you to Lawrence, Kansas with Mattie Lykins Bingham as she went to go visit her stepson, William H.R. Lykins at the time of Quantrill's raid! With her was Elmwood resident, Mattie Lykins Case, all of three years old and the daughter of Kansas City pioneer, Theodore Case. The story starts one day before the fall of the Union Jail in Kansas City. Sit back, relax and keep an eye out your windows for those raiders! We hope you enjoy "Recollections of Mattie Lykins!"
JUST ANNOUNCED! Our first announcement for the Memorial Day events!! Please be sure to join us for the dedication of "Lathrop Drive!" This small drive in front of Block V will be named in honor of the May 11, 1886 tornado victims! Please check back with our "Events" page as more updates and announcements will be made VERY SOON! |

Our March update is NOW POSTED with our newest biographies!! This month's bios take you back inside Quantrill's raid on Lawrence, Kansas, introduce you to a beloved aunt of President Harry S. Truman and the takeover of her family's farm by James Lane's dreaded "Red Legs" and the recollections of an inventor's friendship with Amelia Earhart!! We would like to take this time to thank YOU all for your interest in our biographies and the individuals that they represent! For six straight months, you have made the "historical biographies" page the most visited page on our site! We will continue to bring you some of the greatest history that Kansas City has ever seen, as we strive forward in our efforts to establish Elmwood Cemetery as one of the greatest forces in history in Kansas City!
Be sure to watch for our next exciting update to be added in just a few weeks!! You will meet a close friend of Jesse James Jr., learn about yet another young and talented musician tragically cut down AND......yes folks....we will even touch on the great Chicago Fire of 1871!!! Unbelieveable, huh?
In May, we will have a very special update to our website! This will pay homage to those who were lost and those who survived the horrific tornado on May 11, 1886! This event was Kansas City's first weather tragedy in it's history and we are proud to recognize those Elmwood individuals that died and the ones who fought through to sustain their own lives. This special tribute will be filled with stories of sheer horror, tearful reunions and even a smile or two. We urge you to remember with us the terrible loss of life at the Lathrop Elementary School, Jackson County Courthouse, the Haar Bros. Overall Factory and the Smith & Moffatt Spice Mills.

March has arrived and with it comes this update about the new bios you'll be seeing soon on our New Biographies portion of the Historical Biographies page. It is amazing how SO MUCH history is jam packed within our four walls! In the next couple of weeks, you will meet a man who was close friends with Amelia Earhart! He even worked on one of her planes! You'll also be introduced to an extraordinarily talented famale piano protege' who died at 18 years old and whose work would be recorded by two of the biggest names in blues history! Be sure to check out the aunt of a very beloved President that was with her family when Senator James Lane's Kansas Redlegs raided their farm during the Kansas-Missouri border wars!! And you will read the story of how a precious three year old little girl survived Quantrill's raid on Lawrence, Kansas!
IN JUST A FEW WEEKS, you will meet the Major who was on the heels of Quantrill and his men right after the raid on Lawrence, President Garfield's favorite Latin student and a man who was a close friend of Jesse James, Jr.!!!

The newest bios update is complete and what a line up of history we have for you this time! We apologize for the delay, but we have had some technical problems, but those are cleared up and we are posting again! The new bios offer our fourth Quantrill raider, a former Kansas City police chief that survived the horrific Andersonville prison in the Civil War, plus much more! We are working hard in getting yet another batch of bios up right behind this one! Enjoy and we will see you soon!! |

2-6-06 Welcome to February, everyone! We are getting closer to posting our first story on the new "Stories" page!! Have you figured out what Chief Snow witnessed?? If you dont know the question, go to our new "Stories" page and you will see it posted. WE HAVE BRAND NEW HISTORY!! Yet again, Elmwood Cemetery has tapped into one of the most famous names in American history! Within this month, we will tell you about our connection to......AMELIA EARHART!! That's right, the Amelia Earhart! PLUS....brand new breaking news on another one of our residents, Laura Jane Young Everhart, the aunt of former President, Harry S. Truman! Both of these stories are very intriguing and have strong ties to the history mentioned!! Elmwood Cemetery is, once again, flexing it's historic muscle as one of the most historic places in all of Kansas City!
2-10-06 The first entry for our new "Stories" is NOW POSTED!! This will be the first of many interesting and mostly unknown stories, anecdotes and passages pertaining to residents here at Elmwood. We hope you will find these entries, filled with humor, seriousness and strange twists, as fun to read about as we have. Due to scheduling conflicts and inclimate weather that cancelled photo opportunities, we were not able to post the newest January bios complete with the photos of their gravestones. We WILL have those posted in early February and will continue to bring you regular updates as the history unveils itself. Thank you for your patience!!
New information on Elmwood resident, Kitt Rose! Ol' Kitt had far more history than we knew! It didn't stop with his involvment with Quantrill's company, he knew a lot more famous people from the old west! Go to historic biographies, click on the letter R and click on Kitt Rose. He was a wiley one I tell ya'! You're bound to be surprised by just how many famous people he knew!
We are proud to present "Stories", a new addition to the Elmwood webpage that will tell most unique stories and anecdotes of our residents!! This will expand on some of the history contained within the historical biographies, but also relay neat and interesting tidbits that are not found on our bios page. Stories that are fun, humorous, exciting and serious will be added on a regular basis, so that you may come back again and again. We think you will like this newest page and hope you visit us regularly. So, grab a cup of coffee, sit back and enjoy some memorable moments lived by those who call Elmwood home! |

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Welcome back, everybody. We are proud to announce that this will be a banner year for us! 2006 brings the return of our popular Memorial Day weekend events (events to be announced) and in October, the 4th annual Elmwood Cemetery 5K Graveyard Run and Family Walk will commence on October 28th at 8:00a.m.! PLUS..we will have a beautification project that will add to the art, history and maintenance of the cemetery and it is sure to be enjoyed by all! Stay tuned to our "Historical Biographies" page for an ALL NEW January update where Elmwood history will cross paths with Davy Crockett, the University of Kansas, gunfighter and Dodge City Peace Commission member, Charlie Bassett and the Battle of Lone Jack, Missouri!! The public has been asking for it and we delivered...Genealogy is NOW ONLINE on our website! It is up to 17,500 names and is growing by leaps and bounds! Who knows?.....YOUR family just might be on there right now, stored in our database with some of the greatest names in American history, so search and browse until your hearts content! Yes folks, Elmwood is ready to make a little noise in 2006 as we are working hard to maintain the services and education you enjoy!
