In the past three years, Elmwood Cemetery has worked hard in finding and bringing to light the lost or forgotten histories of the residents interred or scattered here and it has emerged as one of Kansas City's most historic spots, if not THE most historic spot by variety of subject matter. The stories and history of our residents spans across the globe and we are learning more and more on a consistent basis. We are proud to say that we have had support from museums across the United States as they have donated and supplied background, history and profiles of our citizens that were relevant to their own organizations.

They have sent books, booklets and brochures so that we may reach the dream of turning Elmwood into the "Elmwood Cemetery Museum and Educational Library." The list of museums and libraries are growing thanks to the history that is being found all the time. The families of those at rest here have been elated and overjoyed to know that their loved ones are are now emerging from the forgotten past. They have been so very cooperative and hard working in relaying the information needed to build the family histories and genealogy files and they have come through with flying colors! And for all of their help, we are extremely grateful. BUT..........the work is far, far from over! In fact, this is only the beginning! Securing a stronger and long lasting friendship with the different museums and organizations is a goal that will benefit Elmwood long into it's future!

Also, strengthening the bond with the families of those buried here is vital to the success of learning who are residents were. Their faces are looking at us from the past, their last words or great speeches are being heard again by the newspapers and articles that covered their stories of triumph or tragedy. We can see the face of a little girl lost too soon or hear the words of a suicidal man who just couldn't hang on to life any longer. Elmwood is coming alive! Please help us. We need your help to reach out and show Kansas City, Jackson County and the state of Missouri that the education and history here is a valuable asset in our community and to the learning institutions of our society.

Elmwood is more than a place of rest, it is a celebration of our fallen forefathers, our lost veterans, and the important figures that gave this city, the country and the world their own contributions. Elmwood has firmly secured itself into Sierra Club history as we are the resting place of naturalist John Muir's father, Daniel Muir. We have also found a permanent place in Jesse and Frank James past as Jesse wife, Zee was here for eight months and Frank's wife, Ann had her services and cremation carried out at the Armour Chapel. The Heath River and Heath Wildlife Center on the Peru / Bolivia border in South America is named after our own Dr. Edwin Heath! Two NEW museums have recently supplied information to Elmwood. The Harriet Beecher Stowe Center in Hartford, CT has sent copies of authentic letters written by Harriet's nieces who are buried here and the Western Mining & Railroad Museum has sent additional information on Wild Bunch member, Robert "Bob" Lee! This is a 133 year old cemetery that is growing by leaps and bounds! Please show YOUR support for Kansas City's forgotten treasures of the past!
